From Darkness to Light: Phases of a Tunnel Project

A tunnel project is a critical process that requires patience, foresight, and flawless planning, with every step being crucial. At KZY Construction, we implement our projects through the following key stages:

  1. Geological and Geotechnical Surveys: Mapping the Underground The first and most crucial step toward success is understanding the ground we will be traversing. Along the project route, we conduct detailed analyses of the rock structure, fault lines, groundwater pressure, and potential risks through seismic, geophysical, and drilling operations. This data forms our roadmap, determining the entire course of the project, from the tunneling method to the support systems to be used.
  2. Portal Construction and Tunneling: The Beginning of a Grand Adventure. The “portal” structures, the tunnel’s entry and exit points, are meticulously constructed to stabilize the ground and ensure a safe start. Then, we proceed with the modern tunneling technique best suited to the geological structure:
    • NATM (New Austrian Tunneling Method): This method, which we particularly prefer in mountainous and variable ground conditions, involves simultaneous excavation and support operations. After each excavation step, the surface is immediately supported with shotcrete, steel mesh, and rock bolts. This flexible method allows us to use the ground itself as a load-bearing element.
    • TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine): Also known as “moles,” these massive machines offer high speed and safety, especially in long tunnels or in homogeneous ground. The TBM drills the ground with a cutting head at the front, while the system behind it simultaneously transports the excavated material and places the final concrete segments of the tunnel. It’s like a factory moving underground.
  3. Isolation and Final Internal Lining: Guaranteed Longevity: To ensure complete protection against groundwater, the tunnel’s greatest threat throughout its lifespan, the tunnel surface is completely sealed with modern geosynthetic materials. The final concrete lining, which forms the tunnel’s permanent structural system, is then poured using specialized molds, creating a smooth, secure internal structure.
  4. Electromechanical Systems: Where Technology Meets Safety A modern tunnel is not just a concrete structure; it’s an intelligent system. In the final phase of the project, high-tech systems are installed to ensure travel safety and comfort:
    • Ventilation Systems: Evacuates exhaust gases through jet fans and provides continuous fresh air.
    • Lighting Systems: Provides gradual and homogeneous lighting from entrance to exit, enabling drivers’ eye adaptation.
    • Fire Detection and Extinguishing Systems: These are automatic systems that will respond to a possible emergency within seconds.
    • Traffic Control and Communication Systems: A safe traffic flow is ensured by 24/7 monitoring with variable message signs, cameras and announcement systems.
